Frau + Backen = Strudel

This morning I (Kaarin) dedicated a majority of my time to making and baking my first apple strudel! I'm about to attend my first book club meeting (the group has been meeting for awhile, but tonight is the first time I have been able to make it) and the book to be discussed is called A Woman in Berlin. In short, the story is a first-hand account of one woman's life during the initial eight weeks when the Red Army occupied Berlin at the end of WWII.

Tradition with this particular book club (Book Worms Anonymous) is to bring something edible that reflects the current book's era or theme. Tonight is all about being German! Apparently the "strudel" was born in Vienna. Hopefully no one will take issue with this slight deviance tonight!

Here is a recap of my primary attempt. I will have to try again because, unlike a strudel made during the WWII era in Germany, my particular strudel was basted with a bit too much butter! Nevertheless, as Julia Child said, "With enough butter, anything is good!"

Helpful hints for Next Time:

1. Use Granny Smith apples again -- there is plenty of added sweetness in this recipe that will balance out the delicious tartness of these crispy favorites!

2. Using only 1/2 of a cup of walnuts will suffice. Pre-chopped, all the better!

3. This pastry dough was delightful to work with! I've never had such success before -- no tears and lovely flexibility!

4. Buttered bread crumbs, note: this will surely add to the buttery flavor!

5. A harmonious blend of apples, raisins, walnuts, lemon zest, butter, and spices!
6. Critical Note: omit the decorative slits atop the strudel -- leaves flexible dough a little too vulnerable!

7. Easy enough to freeze, and it wouldn't hurt to serve with some added protein over breakfast.

Friendship in Sunshine & in Shade

Kaarin was able to reunite with some of her friends from Trinity Western University over the July 1st and 4th holidays.

Time was spent walking along the beach, reminiscing, cooking delicious meals, and enjoying the peaceful gem of Whidbey Island, WA.

Sightseeing included a local Farmers' Market in Clinton, window shopping in Coupeville, and morning coffee in Langley.

Hardly a moment passed without endless chatter or peals of laughter.

There was a definite process by which one made people into friends; it involved talking to them and listening to them for hours at a time.

April to June 2010

Continuing on...

April

Glenn paid us another visit in April over the Easter weekend and we celebrated his birthday, too!

Little did we know...winter hadn't quite left Ontario by April 27th.

May

At the end of May, we travelled down to Boston/Cambridge, MA for Glenn's graduation from Harvard Business School. Not only did we enjoy a wonderful family gathering, but we accomplished a lot of sightseeing and were able to take in a Red Sox game at Fenway Park!

June

After attending Glenn's graduation, the 5 siblings headed off to Curacao, N.A. for some R & R time together. We spent the week swimming, reading, napping, sunning, and playing Settlers. It was hot, HoT, HOT!

We celebrated our 6th year of wedded bliss at a local burger joint on the 12th.

January to March 2010

In an attempt to bring this blog up to speed, here's a quick recap of some of our highlights earlier in the year.

January

We said goodbye to our cozy apartment of 5 1/2 years and purchased our first home! We had an amazing crew of helpers and the move took a seemingly effortless two-and-a-half hours to complete. Perhaps it was the -15*C temperatures that contributed to the short timeframe!

January was also the month when Kaarin was granted her Canadian cititizenship -- long live the Queen!

February

Kirsten, Jeff & Glenn visited Ottawa! We participated in Ottawa's annual Winterlude Festival by skating on the canal and eating Beavertails. We also cheered Kelly on in one of his hockey games.

March

What do Canadian do to pass the winter months? Why, they play Winter Bocce, of course!

Kelly's parents paid us a visit the week leading up to Easter. Among attending a Thirteen Strings concert, a Seder dinner, and engaging in various sightseeing, we also found time to play a bit of Scrabble. Any Scrabble champ in our household is awarded accordingly!

No Time like the Present

We've debated whether or not to blog for some time now, weighing the pros and cons of keeping a detailed account of our lives online.

Pros:
1. Keeping family and friends up-to-date on our oh-so-exciting lives!
2. Adding a new discipline to our schedules.
Cons:
1. Keeping family and friends up-to-date on our oh-so-exciting lives?
2. Adding a new discipline to our schedules.

Whether or not we take these 'pros' and 'cons' seriously, we thought we'd give it a GO nonetheless! So, enjoy!
